The History of the Dar es Salaam Goat Races
Since the first goats raced in 2001, the Dar es Salaam Charity Goat Races have quickly grown to become Dar’s premier charity event.
The idea of a goat racing event, started in Uganda, where in 1993, members of the business community came up with a novel way of raising money for charity.
They introduced the Goat Races, modeled (vaguely) on the UK Royal Ascot horse races, except with a rather more practical beastie for East Africa – the racing goat. .
Each year the Dar es Salaam Charity Goat Races raise millions of shillings to support small local organisations and charities to carry out their work, and support their local community.
The Dar es Salaam Charity Goat Races would like to thank everybody, from our generous sponsors, to all the people who have “owned” a goat, taken part in the raffle and betting or just turned up on the day and had a great time, for their contribution in making such a big difference to the lives of so many Tanzanians.
The most important part of the Dar es Salaam Goat Races is raising money to support small local organisations and charities that will use the funds to make a significant and sustainable impact on their work, benefiting the wider community within which they are based.
We would like to thank everybody, from our generous sponsors, to all the people who have “owned” a goat, taken part in the raffle and betting or just turned up on the day and had a great time, for their contribution in making such a big difference to the lives of so many Tanzanians.
The time and effort, which is required to bring together the event, is tremendous, especially taking into account the exponential growth of the Races since 2001.
To continue to provide an extremely worthwhile and successful event, this year, we aim to increase our sustainability, to bring in fresh ideas, motivation and energy – something us old timers are very grateful for.
The ethos of the event remains the same, in that it is still a 100% charitable event.
